Flash Flood Of August 24, 2000

horizontal rule

The skies went from blue to black and the rain started to fall hard and fast. The weather reports stated there were to be thunder storms and heavy rains with possible flash flooding.

Here are a series of photos that were taken around the old Pittyvaich House West the day of the flooding.

The photo on the right is looking south east. The amount of water made the roads impassible and in many cases, you could not even wade across.

We are looking east in this photo. This is the road that runs in back of the house. As you can see, there was not exactly a lot of traffic on this day.

The water managed to run around the house. It almost made it to the foundation in a few places, but that was as far as it went, thankfully.

The water receded within a couple of hours after the rain stopped. The majority of the roads were in dire need of repair because of the gullies created by the rushing water and the tons of loose soft sand brought with it. It was several weeks or longer before things got back to normal. While these flash floods happen infrequently, they are part of the desert living.
